Day 50

Phew watch me go!

Ok, I have this thing for large structures.  I know you know, but it helps preface the genre of stuff I like learning about in my self improvement journey (seriously, I hate that word, why did I just use it?).

So have you ever heard about the Eden project?  Scrambling in my memory banks a while ago, I remembered a large kind of "brave new world" experiment in the bottom of the UK somewhere.  You know how when you go into hothouses in the botanical gardens, they're always lovely and warm, well I kind of had this image of a lovely warm big hot house in the middle of the chilly British countryside, with a handful of people all part of a social experiment where they need to form relationships, and start a new breed of hothouse people in their own community.  Kind of like Lord of the Flies, but with grown ups and pretty tropical flowers (and not far from a village with a High Street with Gap and Next and cutesy little pubs).
Thought I should get my facts straight!

The Eden Project is a visitor attraction in the United Kingdom, including the world's largest greenhouse. Inside the artificial biomes are plants that are collected from all around the world. The project is located in a reclaimed clay pit, located 2 kms from the town of St Blazey in Cornwall.  It was established as one of the Landmark Millennium Projects to mark the year 2000 in the UK.
The complex is dominated by two enclosures consisting of adjoining domes that house plant species from around the world. Each enclosure emulates a natural biome. The domes consist of hundreds of hexagonal and pentagonal, inflated, plastic cells supported by steel frames. The first dome emulates a tropical environment, and the second a Mediterranean environment.  The Eden Project hosts many events, and concerts and is a major tourist attraction as well as educational facility.  It costs 39 pound for a family pass, with discounts for those walking or riding.  Nice touch!

You get some right and you see some wrong!

  1. Heard of it? That's my neck of the woods lovey. Lots of my local pommy friends go there for the Eden Sessions (live music) and when we were there two Christmasses ago they had built an ice rink. :-) It is SO popular that it makes the journey to my hometown even more painful than it always has been (2 hours of single lane traffic was always tedious enough). Beeee-u-tiful part of the world. Bonkers structure.
    xx
